When I thought of a magazine that I normally wouldn't buy, the first one that came to mind was Maxim. Maxim is a men’s magazine with articles and pictorials designed to excite and entertain the average man around the ages of 20-40, well that was my guess. I guessed this because the majority of the articles were about, work out tips, tips on how to please woman in bed, pictorials of half-naked beautiful woman & Sports. The process of segmentation is targeting particular members of an audience, and through this process comes "Signaling." This indicates to members of an audience that a media product is for them. With the advertisements for men’s razors, a shampoo and protein bars, it is signaling to the men that this magazine is for them. While researching Maxim magazine on the main website it clearly calls Maxim a "men’s Lifestyle Magazine. I was close when i guessed the age range but the actually male demographic is men among the ages of 18-32. On the website is the media kit where it lists the name of everyone in the company and the publisher’s name, Sean Flanagan. In the kit there are many different options you can choose, in the editorial option the mission statements first sentence was "Men today crave information that can keep up with their increasingly demanding exciting lives." There is also a readership tab calculating their total audience (11,298,000) and the total number of men readers (8833) and woman readers (2,465). They also calculated the ages, education, employment and marital status of their audience demographic. In the specs section where they show their 2012 Rate and they’re rate base is 2,5000,000. When i did my prior assessment of the demographic i had my mind made up that this was strictly a magazine written by men and read by men. But after doing some research i found out that this was not necessarily the case. In 2008 Maxim announced that they will begin to targeting demographic migration, stating that they want to attract a predominantly female audience to the popular men’s magazine. When explaining why, they used blogger Perez Hilton as an example stating most of his readers are woman and he takes in about $18,000 a week. Before my researched i guessed the audience demographic was men 20-40, i wasn’t that off considering it was men 18-32, but i was wrong because I didn’t consider woman as a demographic at all, then come to find out Maxim is starting to try and signal a woman’s demographic, and by the look of their total audience, they’re achieving their goal.

Syria

For my assignment I have decided to compare and contrast the CNN coverage of the terrorist acts in Syria with Al Jazeera English’s coverage. In the CNN coverage the name of the article was “Syrian Residents say they’re bracing for full-blown war.” The article begins by talking about Syrian activists who spoke out against their struggle with the Assad regime. The article speaks of the “fear and horror that have overtaken the residents who have snipers preventing them from moving.” The Al Jazeera article is called “Bombardment of Syrian city continues.” Now to compare, both articles are speaking of the horrific incidents that are happening, the killing of over 7000 civilians, and the fear of Syrian people. But while CNN states that they are bracing themselves for war which seems to mean that there are two parts fighting over something, the Al Jazeera coverage suggest that the Free Syrian Army is desperately trying to defend its civilians and has warned of the serious consequences if the international community fails to act which means that it is more of a one-sided event. CNN is focusing on the attacks and the deaths, talking about how 49 people were killed in such places as Idlib, Homs, Daraa and Aleppo. I feel as though this article focuses more on the people of Syria, making it known that the reporters have spoken to the residents and are covering these stories from inside Syria as best they could. They state that the “Villagers have tried to gather medical supplies and blood to move them into these hard-hit areas and for days has been unable to do so". This from Arwa Damon a reporter covering the story from a safe house in Syria. In these articles I feel as though there is a political bias in the Al Jazeera article because they are focusing more on the politics of regime change and speaks little of the residents. It seems to be all about the Politicians and Army. The government is blaming some of the attacks on al-Queda stating that they are trying to protect the people. The article is suggesting that the Free Syrian Army has denied that its has foreign fighters within its ranks. Saying that Iraq interior minister said that Jihadists are moving from Iraq to Syria and arms are also being smuggled across the border. Then the article goes on to state that a deputy commander of the Syrian Army told Al Jazeera that this is not true and went on to say, “Al-Qaeda is not accepted by Syrian society and it will never live in Syria. According to our information no al-Qaeda element is hidden in our territory because Syrians hate al-Qaeda”. Isn’t the murder of over 7000 people simply a governmental squashing of opposition, just like what happened in other Arab nations? Since CNN cannot independently confirm details of the events in Syria because the government has severely limited the access of international journalists, most of the information is coming from bloggers or those who post videos to YouTube. Each blogger or person who posts to Youtube has a personal agenda or message that they are trying to send. For CNN the personal agenda is more of an American agenda. It is supposed to give an unbiased view of what is happening, but I am sure that there are things that they will or will not share with the world. An interesting difference in the two sources is their disclaimers. On the blog it says “Content on this website is for general information purposes only. Your comments are provided by your own free will and you take sole responsibility for any direct or indirect liability. You hereby provide us with an irrevocable, unlimited, and global license for no consideration to use, reuse, delete or publish comments, in accordance with Community Rules & Guidelines and Terms and Conditions” There are similarities in these articles because both blame Al-Qaeda involvement for these incidents. The Al Jazeera is only focusing on hearsay while CNN discusses issues such as the U.N General Assembly draft resolution that would condemn Syrian human right violations and the attempt of France to help the people of Syria while the nations of Russia and China, block that help. The article states “The draft resolution calls on Syria to end human rights violations and attacks against civilians immediately, and condemns "all violence, irrespective of where it comes from." There is also no denying that many people are dying everyday and that both sides are heavily armed. There is also no denying that both sides are condemning what is happening, they just give different reason for it happening. They are both trying to justify their actions to the world.

my favorite movie

My favorite movie I would have to say is Underworld. Underworld is a movie about Vampires & Warewolfs, obviously the movie is a fictional movie and it is based around one female vampire names Seline. Now Seline is a vampire and her whole life she has been hunting down vampires and killing them. Saline made to believe her whole life that warewolfs killed her entire family. She was spared by the eldest vampire, a father figure to Seline, Victor. A quote from the movie we watched in class said that movies never protay anything they don't want to show. Clearly this movie is not real but our society especially my generation has a fascination with Vampires. In this movie the warewolfs are trying to combine the blood of a vampire with the blood of a werewolf. They are trying to create a whole new race stronger than both supernatural beings. We all know these creatures don't exsist but the whole vampire craze has swept through the younger generation like a plague. People are obsessed with vampire movies, television shows, & games. It is very easy to be seduced by the notion of being a vampire. In most cases they are immortal, stronger, faster and exciting. They don't eat which im sure appeals to the young girls who want to look like sticks. Also they don't have to abide by rules or laws. Vampires can do whatever they want and also seduce whoever they want by "glimmering" them. This is when a vampire looks into a humans eyes and can make them do or say anything they want just by starting at them. That is something I have always wanted to evmulate. I have always wanted to be able to control people just by looking in the eyes. This aspect of the vampire as always attracted me to the vampire lifestyle. I don't think anyone would want to be able to control someone just by looking in theyre eyes. The fascination with staying young and mind control is what I consider to be the most seductive thing about this role. Iv always wanted to be just like Seline she's strong independent and beautiful. These movies have a way of making you love the supernatural aspect of escaping reality. I have always wanted to emulate the trait of glimmering people. I feel like that would make life so much easier, instead of having to do anything you can just make people do things for you. Now little does Seline know, Victor the man she looks to as a father is the one that killed her family. She does not find this out until the end of the movie and ends up cutting off Victors head. The part of the movie I would reject is the Vampires and Werewolfs becoming one race. I think that this is creating a different element to the story because it is supposed to be these beings fighting against each other. Victor killed her own daughter for falling in love with a werewolf, he considered it an abomination. This movie is very seductive by the illusion of reality because it shows supernatural beings living lives as if they were people in the real world"
